Blame it on the...

Every time you think Kanye can't take it any further. He manages to push the envelope until it is busting at the seams. Last week I was shocked at the disrespect of a certain senator from South Carolina, this week I am again appalled at the disrespect showed to new artist Taylor Swift. For those of you who didn't see it, I'm sure you've heard about it, but I will recap. Taylor Swift was giving her acceptance speech for best female video when Kanye approached the stage and interrupted her stating how much better Beyonce's video was. I'm sure after that display B and her husband Jay-Z have a few words to say to Kanye.

I can't imagine being a teenager, on stage and accepting an award and being interrupted by a drunk rapper. Kayne just lost some cool points in my book.

Linebacker Shawn Merriman accused of choking girlfriend: Fact or Fable?

I bet you can’t guess who his girlfriend is?

*drum roll*

Myspace hoe turned TV “Personality”Tila Tequila. I know I know… that’s a bit harsh but that’s what she’s famously known for.

Apparently Tila and Shawn have been an item. Who would have known! What I hate about the media is how they report things. On September 7 Ms. Tequila made a citizen’s arrest on San Diego Chargers linebacker, Shawne Merriman for choking and throwing her to the ground. He was arrested and released around 11 a.m. today. Here’s what his attorney had to say:

“During the evening Ms. Tequila was extremely intoxicated, inebriated and Mr. Merriman did everything he could to assist her in arranging for transportation to leave his home. At no time did Mr. Merriman assault her; at no time did Mr. Merriman keep her against her will. His intentions were nothing but good,”

This statement is later backed up by witnesses. But of course the news reports will make you think otherwise.

Chargers GM’s view of Shawn has been changing. He said that Shawn has become enamored in the Cali ”culture” so this arrest is not raking in the brownie points with him.

Sidenote to men: Stop trying to turn drunk hoes into housewives!

Dark skin v. light skin...still an issue?

After my Cocoa Chick cohort DeeDee blogged about the ex Mrs. Usher Raymond, it made me think of a moving but sad article she wrote about what she has probably experienced all her life but more publicly when she married Usher.

I was a big supporter of this couple and disgusted by the things I was hearing about her. "She's old, she's ugly, she's a has been, she has kids, she's been around the industry" blah, blah, blah. The thing that's funny is that NO ONE said anything remotely the same about Usher and Chili. Why? Chili and Tameka's situation is the EXACT same: Chili was MUCH older, Chili had kids, Chili's son is from a industry man so she too has been 'around' the industy, you can say Chili is a has been (who still brushes their baby hairs on their forehead?). When I brought these comparison's up to people who talked so badly about Tameka, no one had anything to say. So I ask why such a contrast in acceptance of this relationship vs. Usher and Chili.

I know what it was...
Tameka Foster- Raymond wrote an interesting article for the Huffington Post looking at the light vs. dark-skinned issue in the Black community.

“She’s Pretty for a Dark-Skinned Girl…”

I am a dark-skinned African American woman with features that reflect my ancestry. Debates regarding Light vs. Dark and other biases have plagued our race for years and continues to impact millions of Black women. The deeply rooted intra-racial contempt that lies beneath this inane “compliment” is the reason I’ve chosen to spark dialogue surrounding the topic of self-hatred in our culture. It saturates every aspect of our lives, dominating the perspectives of our generation as a whole. We culturally are so influential, at times inadvertently, that we affect all with the words we utter and the images we portray. It lends to the theory of systemic racism. I’m authoring this piece because I’m miffed by this reality and would like to share my views on these subjects.

It is a fact that many African-Americans are often mixed with an array of other ethnicities (as am I), which allows for the spectrum of our features to be as distinctive and special as we are diverse. Why is it felt that the more diluted our traditionally African features become the more aesthetically acceptable we are considered? It was said in the 1960s and the sentiment seems to be forgotten, “Black is Beautiful.” Wow, nearly 50 years later and is that now only meant for a specific shade? Nonetheless, I believe the beauty of our people and splendor of every individual is reflected in our varying features and hues.

Often dark-skinned women are considered mean, domineering and standoffish and it was these very labels she hasthat followed Michelle Obama during the campaign for her husband’s presidency and which had to work tirelessly to combat. I was appalled when I heard a Black woman refer to Michelle Obama as unattractive. The conversation turned into why President Obama picked her as his mate. No one in the witch-hunt made reference to the possibility that Michelle Obama was smart, funny, caring, a good person, highly accomplished or brilliant. Nor did they mention that she previously was President Obama’s supervisor. If she were fair skinned, petite with long straight or wavy hair, would the same opinions be linked to her? I seriously doubt it. It is believed that for the dark skinned, dreams are less obtainable.

One of my favorite quotes comes from the great poet Khalil Gibran who once wrote, “Beauty is not the face; beauty is a light in the heart.”

In fact, I have read similar comments about myself that I am “dark, aggressive, bossy and bitchy.” It has been stated that my husband should have been with a “younger, more beautiful” woman. Astoundingly, the majority of the remarks come from African-American women and are mimicked by others. Sadly enough, I don’t know nor have I met 99% of those making these assertions. Funny, how we can judge another without having personally seen, interacted with or experienced a person’s character.

As I began to delve into further research on this topic, and the more I read, I concluded that many of our people do not like what they see in the mirror. Seeing ones own reflection in another person and then to dissect it in an effort to destroy can only be the product of self-loathing. Why don’t we congratulate as opposed to hate?

There is an adage “hurt people, hurt people”. If this is true then we must examine the root of negative words and judgments that are passed on people. Unfortunately, we have internal stereotypes based off of skin color and facial features that stem from years of programming, dating back to the “Willie Lynch” method for creating a slave. In this infamous formula, one of the main factors in separating and creating division was placing the lighter skinned blacks in a higher position in the house, while those with darker skin were made to stay in the fields and deemed “less desirable”. Much like the Caste System in India. No matter what strides we make as a people, these issues continue to plague and rot our souls, causing significant decay to a portion of our population and truly hindering our progress. Perhaps we show progress in our wallets and lifestyles but not in our mind set.

Reading magazines, social media sites, watching our music videos, and television shows feed our appetites for all things ‘beauty”. Rarely, however do I see depictions of grace and elegance in the form of dark complexioned women. I Googled one of the more ethnic models, Alek Wek and I was saddened by the tone of what the bloggers wrote in reference to her complexion, features and hair texture. Ms. Wek’s escape from Sudan, her journey, philanthropy, and groundbreaking success as a supermodel in America is not only beautiful, but it displays her tenacity and character. African-Americans seemed to have lost their eye for character. These comments are evidence of the confusion that lies within many black people. It’s the cruelty and prejudice that has spilled into the fabric of our everyday lives. It makes me wonder what have we collectively lost as a people? Our Minds.

I too have fallen prey, while on vacation in Brazil I decided to undergo tummy lipo-surgery. After having an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, I went into cardiac arrest before the procedure ever began. I nearly lost my life over something as superficial as having a flatter mid-section and trying to adapt to society’s traditional definition of beauty. As I nursed my psychological wounds, I began to realize that trying to live up to the prototypes of external beauty paled in comparison to the fact that I have undergone labor, subsequently being blessed to raise five handsome, smart, healthy, intuitive, and happy children. I emerged from my ordeal realizing that my body is an amazing vessel that has given birth to life and that being healthy is what’s important and nothing more.

It is my hope that our First Lady and others who share in this effort will continue to be the beacon to shine a light for those who toil on America’s beauty totem pole. Now don’t get me wrong or take my words out of context. I truly believe that everyone has a right to delineate what they deem is attractive, but we must not confuse perceived “attractiveness” with authentic “beauty.” It is important for African Americans, especially, to realize that true beauty is a spiritual element that lies deep within an individual’s spirit. It can neither be seen nor is it tangible. People tend to forget that beauty is not about looks and looks is not about beauty.

We need to realize we are beautiful no matter where we fall in the color spectrum!!!

Jennifer Hudson gives birth to boy

Less than a year ago we were in shock to hear of the tragic murders of J. Hudson's family. It became even more tragic when her 7 year old nephew was missing for 3 days only to be found dead in the back seat of a SUV with two gun shot wounds to the head.

August 10th she celebrated the new life of her new baby boy, David Daniel Otunga, Jr. Weighing in at 7 pounds 14 ounces, the baby boy is named after the father and her fiance, better known as "Punk" from the I Love New York train wreck. Sources say the baby is happy and healthy! Congrats J!

If Someone White Said That...

Today I’m handing out awards. The category: 21st Century Steppin’ Fetchit Coonin’ Buck Singing Shining Modern Day Minstrel.
And the award goes too…

*drumroll*

Lil Wayne!

The crowd goes crazy and stands to their feet!
As a lover of hip-hop; a lover of lyricists; a lover of artists such as Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, KRS One, Kane, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, The Roots, Slick Rick, Brand Nubians, Eric B. and Rakim, LL Cool J, Mc Lyte, K Solo, Roxanne Shante, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Dead Prez, Latifah the list goes on and on and on, I have been totally disgusted with this generation of rap. 90% of the rappers out now are WACK lyrically. 95% of the rappers out now are OUT OF THIS WORLD mentally. 98% of them are not in it, emotionally. This recipe is only built for disaster and Armageddon has hit the rap world.

Our 21st Century Steppin’ Fetchit Coonin’ Buck Singing Shining Modern Day Minstrel award recipient, Lil Wayne, has a song titled “Whip It Like a Slave.” I would not have known this because I do not own a SINGLE Lil Wayne album but through hearsay, it was brought to my attention.
Long hair pretty eyes light skin fine legs,
Phat a**, skinny stomach, pretty feet, pretty woman
Walking down the street cause I put her out my jeep,
I don't save em, I slave em, they want weezy f,I bad grade em,
I don't degrade em, I serenade em,
100 on the charm
100 on the arm
Rings so thick I can't even make a fist
Nigga f*ck how you do it cause I do it like this
Yeah, and I just do my wayne
And every time I do it I do my thang,
say I do it how I do it when I do it everyday

and I whip it like a slave like a mother f***in slave
yes I whip it like a slave yes I whip it like a slave
I whip it like a slave like a mother f***in slave
yea I whip it like a slave like a mother f***in slave
then I beat it I beat it I beat it I beat it
I beat that....block
I beat that block like it misbehaved

then I whip it, I whip it, I whip it, like a slave

There are a number of things wrong with this passage. Most of these things have plagued blacks for generations and it is clear as day that Weazy f baby is directly affected by these things. His reference to light skin, the misogynistic tone, the trivialness of the insurmountable cost of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and the downplaying of the damage drugs did to black communities are some to name a few.

My friends and I discussed our issues about this song over the weekend. Some believe that one of the many white music conglomerates that’s been pimping these artists suggested the title and Wayne, like a puppet, a 21st Century Steppin’ Fetchit Coonin’ Buck Singing Shining Modern Day Minstrel puppet, just did as his masters told him. Other’s go by Wayne’s history and chops it up as they think he’s that ignorant and stupid enough to make a song like this. I believe it could happen both ways. The point is, it happened. If he thought of it himself, that’s a problem. If the powers-that-be suggested it and he agreed, that’s a problem as well.

Lil Wayne is not the only Coon artist out there. He’s not the only one poisoning our airways with this garbage. So why do I feel so fired up about this song? Because no one else seems to be fired up about it. Why?

Oh, wait! I just figured it out. Lil Wayne is black. Had this song been created by a white artist, black folks would be ready to take it to the streets. If Bill O’Reilly uttered “whip it like a slave” on his national TV show, we would be ready to burn down the Fox network. I can hear Rev. Al Sharpton, Warren Ballentine, Michael Baisden, Michael Eric Dyson, Dr. Cornel West and the countless other old school and new school ‘leaders’ (I use the word loosely for some) talking about this subject. I can hear the buzz in chat rooms across the World Wide Web. The blog world would be on fire had New Kids On The Block sang this song. I can almost imagine the diss records that would be in immediate production if Eminem had made this song instead of Lil Wayne. But all I hear are cricketts.

I guess because the man uttering these repulsive words is black means its ok, huh?

When little Johnny comes beep-bopping down his suburban street and ventures out to the urban streets with earphones in ear chanting “I whip it like a slave, I whip it like a slave” what’s going to happen? This song will mess around and get Little Johnny dived on. But because we have become so far removed from the impact of slavery, racism, the Civil Rights movement, our parents being hosed and not knowing your grandfather because he was lynched for looking a white man in the eye etc. etc. etc, we accept this garbage as ‘our own’ therefore making it acceptable for others to think the same. Sounds like what has happened with the word nigger, doesn’t it?

So what are you going to do about it? Probably nothing. You’ll probably continue to support Wayne or his label or anything affiliated with the production and execution of this song. You’ll probably send your child to his upcoming tour. You’ll probably still make him one of the most downloaded artist for ringtones and Itunes. You’ll continue to make the music conglomerates that sign off on this crap, conglomerates. As usual, you will not do anything but sit by and accept it. I, on the other hand, plan on letting as many people know that this shit will not be tolerated. Enough is enough already.

The Swagger Report: Fashion For The Cocoa Man

Today's fashion has alot of ups and downs. I hate trends! A few years back I was ecstatic when artists like Usher, Jay-Z and P. Diddy changed up their style and exchanged a jersey for a blazer and a button down shirt. I slowly begin to see young men do the same and hoped THIS trend would last forever.

Fast foward to today and you see that trend has some what come and gone.
The new trend is dingy boxer shorts. Boys and even some men are walking down the street with their ass showing ON PURPOSE. Then you have the long white tshirts that looks like pajamas. Finally *drumroll*..... SKINNY JEANS! Who told men that they could wear skinny jeans? It's not a good look!

There's nothing sexier than a put together man. Wether he's in a 3-piece suit, a blazer and a button down or some jeans and Timbalands..he's got it. The way he walks and licks his lips to the creases in his pants, he can turn a woman on just by walking by. So I've compiled a list of celebrities that exude what the Swagger Report is all about.

Here, T.I. looks appropriate for the young 20 something year old male. Please note his pants are not hanging off his ass and his t-shirt does not look like a dress. This is a good look for you young whipper-snappers but you must be able to switch it up sometimes!

Next are the men in their 30s. This is a good age bracket because you have alot of options and looks to go with. You can dress down and still look age appropriate and sexy as hell or you can get all GQ'd up and still look like a young fly 30 year-old.

Fashion for the man 40 and above is embodied by men like Jay-z, P. Diddy, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington etc.etc. etc. Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is HOV!!!!
YUMMY!

The T.O. Show

My girl Dee is going to kill me for reviewing this but she was taking to long. A couple of weeks ago I posted a hate letter to reality tv. I vowed I would never tune in (except to watch Project Runway) but I must retract that statement. I LOVE 'The T.O. Show'! LOVE IT!
There are the obvious reasons, like his body, which is SICK by the way and that dashing smile and that body...you get the point. I can look at T.O. from the neck down all day. But other than that chiseled frame, the show is actually good! It starts off with him getting cut from the Dallas Cowboys and how that effects him. Usually we see a very well written media response from a player that gets cut and never any real emotions. You could tell that Terrell was hurt by this news. Then here comes his homegirls turned Publicists/Assistants Mo and Kita to save the day. They jump right in to damage control.

The first two episodes of the season are good so far. He finds out he's going to Buffalo, moves to LA, links up with a prostitute Realtor and reaches out to his ex-fiance. His publicist has been on a search all her life to find her half sister and she finds her. You learn very quickly that there's a side of T.O. that the media will not show. Other than the cocky, confident, flirtatious T.O. the athlete, there's Terrell, a man. He's apologetic and admits how he treated his ex-fiance; he's not embarrassed to express his feelings; he desires real friendships and wants good people around him like his long time friend Pablo and Mo and Kita.

I can't wait for next week! Terrell finally sees his 'father' that he hasn't seen in over 20 years. It sounds like the man who abandoned his child was living across the street from Terrell his entire life. INTERESTING!

Tune in Mondays at 10 p.m. on Vh1.

By the way, did I mention the body??

Kelis' Milkshake Brings Nas To The Bank

Newly divorce Kelis and Nas give birth to their first child Wednesday night. A healthy boy named Knight. With claims of Nas leaving her 'high and dry' during her pregnancy, he was there for the birth of baby Knight. What he will not leave her high and dry for: spousal and child support.

Hours before Knight was born, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ordered Nasir Jones to pay Kelis $44,000 a month until September 8, 2009. On top of that $44k, he must also pay an additional $40,000+ for Kelis' attorney fees and forensic accountant. Kelis claims Nas 'abandoned' her during her pregnancy. Nas is saying he gave her $30,000 for maintaining her health insurance costs.

That's some expensive ass milkshake!

Music Is OFFICIALLY Dead Now

If you have a pulse, then you are in disbelief about the sudden death of Michael Jackson. Yeah, yeah, yeah we all die and as cliche-ish as this sounds, MJ was not supposed to die! I'm typically not moved by many stars and can't think of any in my lifetime that have died and I felt the need to express myself but today I'm realizing how iconic Michael was...no IS. This man transcended race, music and popularity. His fans love for him transcended infatuation. Michael Jackson was the man. PERIOD.

You may not want to believe it but music is officially dead. MJ was the epitome of music. MJ was music. He was able to sell 100 million albums back in a day when there was a racial divide on programs such as MTV. He didn't need a duet on every single on his album like artists need now. He was the first one to have the #1 pop single, #1 pop album, #1 R&B single and #1 R&B album SIMUTANEOUSLY. He's the only one to have five or six #1 singles on the same album. He has the ALL TIME best selling album EVER. That same album is re-released 25 years later and still goes multi-platinum. And most people think Beyonce is a icon.. .GIVE ME A BREAK!

Yes, music is officially dead. Will we ever get an album like Thriller again? Will we ever get 'Bad' again? Will we get ' Off The Wall' again? Will anyone ever have 7 top ten singles on a album ever again? No. With all the video channels, marketing advances, radio stations and other avenues that put an artist at the fingetips of everyone in the world, they can barely sell 2 million albums. Artists aren't entertainers anymore. Talent and desire are no longer a prerequisite. Think of his concerts and think of todays concerts, there is no comparison. Think of all his hit songs and think of 'hit' songs today, there is no comparison. With Michael around it was a reminder of how good music was. It kept hope alive for me. Everytime I hear 'Thriller' or 'PYT' I hold onto hope that an upcoming singer would try to emulate him. But to no avail.

Genius has been used very loosely over the years. As well as great. Michael was beyond that. He was a trailblazer. This man created masterpieces that we haven't seen since.

With MJ gone it's like the 1000 piece puzzle I worked on for months only to find out that there was a piece missing - incomplete and the box cover can't be duplicated.

*Sigh* Yes, music is officially dead.

The Hangover - Sure To Be a Cult Classic

I'm sure every American has heard that The Hangover is the FUNNIEST movie of the year. It has killed the box office for two weeks and I'm sure it will for this third weekend. This is sure to be the next cult classic.

For those of you that have been living under a rock, no offense but I don't even watch TV and I heard of this movie. The movie is about a foursome that go to Las Vegas two days before their friend's wedding to have a blowout night they will never forget, LET THE HILARITY ENSUE. This trip is the worst case scenario. I laughed from beginning to end and like the people to the left of me who were quoting the movie, yes in the third week they were resiting the lines as they were being said, I will surely have to view it again as I missed many jokes because of the sound of my own laughter.

The movie had a perfect combination of the ridiculous, witty and slapstick. Ed Helms, of The Office and John Stewart Show fame, is hilariously dry and Zach Galifianakis, who also started in another film that shows the dangers of Sin City (What Happens in Vegas), is psychotic and endearing.

This film is C3licious.
